Do you hold a degree in Chemistry or Physics? Are you passionate about failure analysis, forensic investigation, and identifying the root cause? This could be the role for you.

This Fire and Explosion Investigator position is a technically demanding, challenging and rewarding role requiring not only a thorough understanding of basic chemistry and physics but also the ability to tackle problems from first principles.

The Company

My client boasts extensive experience in delivering diverse forensic investigation services and root cause analyses for the insurance and risk management sectors. With offices both in the UK and internationally, they employ seasoned scientists and engineers who conduct investigations across the globe.

The Role

You'll have the chance to investigate a diverse range of fires and explosions, ranging from household and office incidents to potentially super tanker and commercial airliner incidents. The allure of this role lies in its completely unpredictable nature and the varied locations of the work.

Your responsibilities will entail visiting incident sites, sometimes on short notice, to conduct witness interviews and gather physical evidence including photographic and written scene documentation, physical samples and evidence retention plus analysis of data sources.

Much of your work will involve examining failed components and other evidence in a laboratory setting. Additionally, there's a practical aspect to the job where you may need to dismantle machinery, equipment, or component assemblies methodically to obtain necessary evidence for determining the cause of the fire or explosion.

You'll perform tests on components and materials, whilst reviewing technical information to produce a comprehensive and unbiased report.

Ideally, you will:

  • Hold a good honours degree in an engineering or science-based field (chemistry, physics or mechanical)
  • Be progressing towards Chartered status in a specific discipline at a minimum
  • Possess a higher degree through study or research (e.g., MSc or PhD), which is desirable
  • Will be proficient in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling and analysis for smoke movement
  • Be capable of completing a day's worth of site work, which may include physical exertion
  • Exhibit clear communication skills in conveying technical concepts to individuals with lesser expertise, both verbally and in writing
  • Be willing to accommodate unpredictable work hours as per job demands
  • Have accumulated several years of postgraduate experience
