My client is the leading provider of specialist products in their chosen field, based in LE19 with close links to the M1, M69 and A50. They are currently looking for a skilled Production Manager with experience of working in a thriving sheet metal fabrication company. Other suitable job titles could include Engineering Manager, Shift Manager or Workshop Manager.
 
The Role of Production Manager:

  • Responsible for the delivery of customers’ orders, on time in full, maintaining high standards and significantly improving production lead times
  • Liaise with the Sales Office and Dispatch teams and answer any queries
  • Prepping the production staff for the working day ahead and organising the factory to be clear and organised at the end of the working day
  • Monitor jobs through the manufacturing process to spot and eliminate any faults or mistakes
  • Overseeing the expected daily production schedule, ensuring all manufacturing operations are completed
  • Managing and motivating a team of 30-40 direct reports with various skill levels
  • Offering training to new or current employees, this being either skilled training or simple health and safety training
  • Adding capacity on the shop floor and offering a substitute for any unforeseen absence
  • Maintaining a safe and tidy working environment
  • Taking ownership of all Health & Safety matters within the business
  • Monitor all health and safety risks and enforce PPE
  • Analyse and review current manufacturing operations/ processes to improve efficiency
 
Minimum Skills / Experience Required:
  • Experience of being a Production Manager within bespoke Sheet metal or general fabrication manufacturing
  • Experience in working in a quick paced 72hr lead time environment (‘JIT’ manufacturing)
  • At least 2 years experience as a production manager, managing a team of at least 15 direct reports across multiple departments
  • Experience of using MRP software 
  • An understanding of production planning/scheduling processes
  • Strong people manager who can motivate people of varying skill and experience levels
  • Self-motivated and takes responsibility when things go wrong

● Monitor customer responses to automated monthly emails 
● Assist in generating quotes for any remedial work following jobs and any other quotations from customers or the sales team, i.e machine moves

The Role of Production Manager:

  • This is a key role for the growth of the Manufacturing Department and the successful individual will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Production unit, making appropriate decisions on production, planning, raw material, quality, safety and personnel development and requirements. 
  • Manage a team of circa 70 heads with 3-4 direct reports
  • Ensure that all products are manufactured according to customer specifications and are completed and delivered to the customer on time through the efficient use of labour and resources. 
  • Lead Lean Manufacturing programmes and initiatives including cellular manufacturing processes,  Kaizen, Target costing, Kan-ban and process analysis 
  • To ensure output levels are achieved and challenged in order to hit efficiency targets 
  • To work closely and co-operate with the Quality & Technical department, ensuring processes operate at an optimum level and to continuously seek to develop and improve all processes, procedures,  operations and methods within the area of responsibility 
  • To ensure staffing levels meet production requirements each working day and that all functions are  adequately and appropriately staffed at all times
  • To ensure that, in line with agreed budgetary targets, effective resources are in place to meet the  demands of the business unit, complying with all relevant policies and procedures 
  • Effectively work with the HR Department to ensure all staff training and development needs are identified and met through the implementation of the company’s performance review process 
  • Having a pragmatic, hands-on approach with leadership skills being highly visible at all times 
  • Hold regular team communication forums and ensure that relevant business information is  communicated effectively and cascaded throughout areas of responsibility 
  • Ensure that full cooperation is given to the Health & Safety Manager in relation to risk assessment  and accident reporting incidences 
  • Delivery of a seamless interface with internal and external customers 
  • Proven Lean Manufacturing background with experience in working to ISO9001 
  • Strong people management skills, with the ability to focus and drive staff to achieve results in a  pressurised environment with strict deadlines. 

Minimum Skills / Experience Required:
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, engineering or production management role (Essential)
  • Apprentice trained to NVQ level 3 or equivalent (desirable)
  • Mechanical HNC or Certificate in Management Studies (desirable)
  • Lean / Sigma Green Belt or significant practical deployment of lean manufacturing techniques,  process improvements and proactive quality management 
  • IOSH experience or similar (desirable)
  • Worked with technically complex products and equipment ideally in a fabrication or machining  environment (essential)
