The Role of Field Service Engineer

  • Some simple PLC software programming, downloading programs, replacement of parts and commissioning

  • Candidates must have a full driving license and be willing to travel across southern England

The Candidate

The Role: Commissioning Engineer

My client is looking to recruit a controls biassed commissioning engineer, to form part of  a dedicated team whose primary focus is to transition our automated equipment from completion of build  through to customer inspection and sign-off. Managing Projects through to completion playing a large part in this role.

Key Responsibilities

The following list is an indication of roles and responsibilities you will be expected to undertake as a successful commissioning engineer. The list is not exhaustive and intended as guidance only. Individual tasks vary depending on the type of technical support you are providing, but in general, you'll need to: 

  • Programme and modify control systems using PLC’s, Servo drives, Robots, and other  specialised controllers specific to customer requirements. 

  • Troubleshoot & adjust mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and controls equipment. 

  • Fault finding and operational assessment of mechanisms both in isolation and in complex form. 

  • Modifying systems through electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or software means to  enhance performance.

  • Identify opportunities to improve a system with a view to presenting these to other team  members. 

  • Perform tests, using structured processes, to build a defined understanding of a  mechanism’s limitations. 

  • Record test results in suitable manner such that they can be used to support the  necessity/direction of further work. 

  • Ensure records of all modifications are documented correctly. 

  • Provide proactive feedback to the project team to enable project progress to be determined. 

  • Participate in internal design reviews on existing or potential projects. 

  • You may be required to attend and work at customer premises throughout the UK and  overseas. 

The Right Person

The successful Commissioning Engineer will have the relevant vocational training or will have completed a recognised apprenticeship in an electrical or mechanical discipline as well as possessing the following attributes and skills:
  • Experience programming Programmable Logic controllers (PLC), and Human  Machine Interfaces (HMI) using software such as Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Festo,  Codesys, Siemens. 

  • Knowledge of setting up Servos, VFD’s, Remote I/O, Ethernet and Profibus networks. 

  • Proven electrical, pneumatic, or mechanical experience within the automation industry. 

  • Ability to follow electrical and pneumatic schematic diagrams and drawings. 

  • Knowledge of 6 Axis Robot systems is preferred. 

  • Knowledge of script-based programming would be an advantage.

They are currently looking for a skilled Mechanical Fitter with site supervising experience to help install automation machinery projects for their predominantly Midlands-based clients.

The Role: Installation Site Supervisor

  • Ensuring a high standard of quality is maintained on all site Installations
  • Oversee mechanical installations on site, through to completion, from handover from Project managers after a meeting to establish and identify best practices for the works ahead
  • Identifying unsafe plant, working conditions and practices to keep all engineers safe
  • Identifying all installation components sent, and flag any missing parts, shortages, that will delay site installations to PMs as early as possible
  • Mechanical fitting, assembly, installation/final fit/commissioning of conveyor systems and platforms
  • Site installation on customers sites and working away from home
  • Using a multitude of tools and manual handling equipment
  • Reading and understanding of mechanical assembly drawings
  • Overnight stays as little as 2/3x per month up to weeks at a time

Minimum Skills / Experience Required: Installation Site Supervisor
  • Skilled mechanical fitter with experience in mechanical installation
  • Experience in onsite supervision/Proven man-management experience within an engineering environment
  • Experience overseeing mechanical onsite installations from start to finish
  • Experience installing platforms, conveyors, walkways, and automated equipment/machinery
  • NVQ level 3, in engineering, or equivalent
  • 5 years mechanical installation experience
  • Able to operate in a customer facing environment
  • Competent in reading engineering drawings and updating when required
  • Welding experience (advantageous)
  • Lifting Equipment, FLT, MEWP, Licences/experience (advantageous)
  • Full clean UK driving licence (essential)
