Are you a Metallurgist seeking your next Technical Challenge? If you like investigating and examining the performance of metals such as iron, steel, aluminium, nickel and copper then this is the job for you!
This is a great career opportunity for a Metallurgist to be trained by Experts. This career opportunity is rewarding, extremely challenging and a unique proposition for those who thrive on technically focused work.
My client is both a very well established family business and the UK’s most successful independent materials and engineering consultancy providing a wide range of forensic investigation services both internationally and nationwide. With over a 100 years under their belt and over 100 engineers based on site, they are now seeking a Metallurgist to undertake various testing, inspection and investigations for all aspects of civil and mechanical engineering.
You will have the opportunity to investigate a wide range of incidents and accidents where it is suspected that the cause may be related to a metallurgical failure. You will encounter a variety of failure modes and mechanisms involving metallic and nonmetallic materials. We need people of a particular mind-set who enjoy applying their practical and theoretical thinking to determine why a problem exists and how to solve it. The role is very hands on, and will require someone who has a technical and practice approach to dismantle equipment or components in a systematic manner to obtain the evidence you require to determine the cause of the failure. You will then examine and analyse this and other physical evidence in the Client's own on-site laboratories.
As a Chartered Engineer you will have full membership of an appropriate recognised professional institution (ideally IOM3) You should also possess substantial metallurgical experience.
With the option of working from home, you can also look forward to real flexibility, plus an excellent work/life balance. You will enjoy a high level of responsibility as well as autonomy but with the full support of a dedicated management network.
Key Responsibilities (including, but not limited to;)
Conducting site-based investigations to record and gather the available physical evidence
Reviewing technical documentation that may comprise engineering drawings, operating manuals and maintenance records.
Providing the client with timely preliminary verbal and/or written advice in a form that can be readily understood by a layperson and ultimately a Judge
Conducting detailed laboratory based examinations and analyses of failed components that may involve optical microscopy of prepared samples, hardness testing, chemical analysis and the examination and analysis of samples using a scanning electron microscope.
Mechanical testing of components or materials.
Devising and conducting ad hoc testing of components, equipment or machinery
Preparing reports that may be in the form of a brief letter style report or in the form of a detailed, illustrated report for Court proceedings.
Consulting relevant standards, regulations and other published guidance
Ideally you will;
Have attained a good honours degree in Metallurgy / Materials
Be a member of an appropriate recognised professional institution (IOM3)
A higher degree by study or research (eg MSc or PhD) is desirable
Be a Chartered Engineer
Have experience of undertaking engineering type investigations and be familiar with health and safety regulations and guidance relating to the workplace
